are priorities for the
BC Hydro 'Turn It Off' Challenge
In partnership with BC Hydro, the Town of Fort Nelson participated in the Turn It Off Challenge, which ran from June 1st to August 31st, 2007. The overall goals of the workshop were to inspire municipalities to increase awareness of energy consumption, reduce environmental impacts and to demonstrate conservation leadership. This initiative was also connected with Council’s Strategic Planning Objective 14- Recycling, Solid Waste Management and Green Initiatives.
As part of this Challenge, the Town of Fort Nelson competed provincially against other small communities to become a conservation leader in the province and to promote energy awareness and reduce our power consumption. The grand prize from BC Hydro is a $20 000 Power Smart makeover for a municipal building.
By encouraging municipalities and the public to make simple changes such as turning off and unplugging all unnecessary lights, appliances and office equipment, a significant contribution to energy efficiency can be made and the awareness of our energy supply is increased.
Some tips for conserving energy:
-
Turn off lights when areas are not in use
Turn off your lights when you leave a room and in other unoccupied areas such as copy rooms, break rooms, conference rooms, and restrooms.
-
Make use of the sun
Turn lights off whenever there is enough natural light available.
-
Use window coverings effectively
In the winter, close curtains, shades or blinds during unoccupied periods to retain heat. However, be sure to open them on sunny days to take advantage of winter sun. In hot weather, these window coverings can also prevent some heat gain.
