Water Treatment

  • The water source for the Town of Fort Nelson is the Muskwa River. This river is high in turbidity (silt). It is pumped to three large settling reservoirs to remove and separate the silt. These ponds contain 120,000,000 gallons of water.
  • The Water Treatment Plant uses filtration systems and chlorine gas to produce potable water for the Town of Fort Nelson.
  • The water distribution system operates on a user demand basis by supplying water to the Town, Rural West, Fort Nelson First Nations, and the Bulk Water Customers.
  • Annually the distribution system is flushed and cleaned through the hydrants for quality assurance.

Sewer Treatment

  • The in-ground sewer system is a network of service and trunk mains that collect and dispose of sewer to the community Sewer Treatment Plant, which is located 2 kilometers from the Town.
  • The Sewer Treatment Plant is a series of large lagoons with primary treatment during the first two lagoons from aeration. The final two lagoons are settling and polishing cells before the treated effluent is dispersed to the river.
  • There is a Lift Station located in the Light Industrial area of town to lift and push the sewer from lower areas up to the flow trunk line.

Properties not connected to the Municipal system may use private pump-out services and dispose of sewer sludge to private treatment 20 kilometres south of Town.
